This time of year, everyone is concerned about the “Cold & Flu Season”. Invariably, people start asking me about flu shots.

CONCERNED PATIENT: “What do you think about the flu shot, Dr. Jay?”

ME: “I think a lot of things about the flu shot. Are you considering getting one?

CONCERNED PATIENT: “Well, maybe. My doctor wants me to get one but I’m not sure. I got one last year and I still got sick for a week.”

ME: “Hmmm…that’s interesting. Didn’t seem to work, huh?”

CONCERNED PATIENT: “No, I guess not really…Do you get the flu shot, Dr. Jay?

ME: “Hell no.”

CONCERNED PATIENT: “Oh, uhh…err….umm…”

I have never gotten a flu shot and I never would.

The last shot I got was a tetanus booster in 9^th grade. I remember it well because right after getting injected by the doctor, my mom took me to the park to play mud football with my buddies but my arm hurt so much I could hardly throw the ball. No fun that day.

The last antibiotic I took was in 1994 (which was also the last time I saw a medical doctor). Now I know better. But that’s another story.

It’s up to you what you do to your body and what you do for your family’s health, of course. But I’ll tell you why I feel so strongly about flu shots and you decide what to do for yourself.

First of all, the whole point of getting a flu shot is to not get sick, right?

But I can’t tell you how many people come into my office a few days after getting a flu shot complaining about feeling the very same cold and flu symptoms they were trying to avoid!

Secondly, it’s important to understand that the flu shot is only designed to immunize you to 4-6 strains of flu virus. Out of the literally hundreds of flu virus strains going around at any one  time, the CDC chooses a few of them that they think will be the worst ones that season.

So even if you believe that the flu shot works, there are still hundreds of other strains of flu virus that can still get you.

Thirdly, take a look at the list of ingredients in a typical flu shot:

Ethylene glycol = antifreeze. I’m not a car.

Phenol (aka: carbolic acid) = disinfectant. I’m not counter top that needs to be sanitized.

Aluminum = associated with Alzheimer’s disease, seizures and causes cancer in laboratory mice. None for me thanks.

Thimerosal = a mercury disinfectant/preservative that can cause brain injury and autoimmune disease. I’ll risk my mercury exposure with more sushi, thank you very much.

Formaldehyde = preservative and a known cancer-causing agent. I’m not a corpse that needs to be embalmed…yet! But I might be one if I get this shot!

Also, vaccines are grown in the laboratory through the use of chicken embryos, monkey kidney tissue, embryonic guinea pig cells, calf serum, and even the dissected organs of aborted human fetuses.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want any of that crap in my body!

How could your immune system possibly function well enough to fight off cold and flu bugs with all of those toxic pollutants floating around in your bloodstream?

Why not give your immune system what it needs to do its job and keep you healthy naturally?

Keeping your immune system healthy so that you’re bulletproof through the cold and flu season isn’t rocket science. You just need to stay rested, eat well, exercise your body and drink plenty of water. You can do that can’t you?

And if you find yourself in your doctor’s office and you’re not sure if you want to get the annual flu shot this time, ask your doctor to read you the insert that comes with the vaccine. Then have him/her tell you what the possible side effects of getting the flu shot are and what symptoms to look out for. Ask your doctor why they think it’s a good idea to inject your body with toxic chemicals and how that will help your immune system function better than it is now.

Chances are you’ll here the typical fall back explanations:

“These side effects are really rare.” Oh yeah, well what if it happens to you?

“It’s important for you to get immunized so you don’t pass it on to someone else.” Really? Well if immunizations “work”, then your unvaccinated body isn’t a threat to anyone else who has been vaccinated.

“If you don’t get the flu shot, you run the risk of getting very, very sick, possibly even dying.” Really? Death from the flu? The only people that die from the flu are people that are already severely immune compromised AND severely neglect themselves. Proper hydration and simple health care support would eliminate such risk. Take your fear tactics somewhere else, doc!

When it comes right down to it, you have a choice. Choose wisely.

I have never gotten the flu shot and I haven’t missed more than one day of work from being sick for over 10 years.

And I’m exposed to virus and bacteria all the time because people come to me when they’re sick to get better. If the Germ Theory were true, I’d be sick all the time.

But the fact is, I’m not. I want you to come in and get adjusted when you’re feeling sick because clearing out your Nervous System allows your immune system to function properly. Then your body can fight off what you’re coming down with more effectively.

“Oh, but Dr. Jay I don’t want to get you sick.”

Nonsense. I take care of my body through diet, exercise and managing my stress so my immune system is strong. Get in here and get on the table so you can get to feeling better!

What makes you sick: a strong bug or a weak immune system?

A stressed out immune system can’t fight off the virus or bacteria that are around you ALL THE TIME. That’s why you get sick.

Eat well, drink lots of water, move your body, get lots of rest and manage your stress.

Too simplistic? Pollyanna “Be Well” thinking?

Give it a try and see what happens. I’ve used these methods for years and I’m healthy.

And that’s why I never got a flu shot when they came into vogue years ago and that’s why I will never get one.

NOSODES 2008 History is made in Cuba

A historical and inspiring event took place 10-12 December 2008 in Havana Cuba that I had the honour to attend. There, the Carlos J Finlay Institute under the guidance of its director-general, Dra. Conception Campa Huergo and Dr. Gustavo Bravo and others hosted NOSODES 2008, an International Meeting on Homeoprophilaxis, Homeopathic Immunization and Nosodes against Epidemics.

Homeopaths from Cuba, S America, Canada, Australia, UK, and Kenya (yours truly) made presentations on the wide varieties of successful disease prevention using homeopathy and more specifically, nosodes.

Each presentation was more amazing than the previous. All were very remarkable and notable in the field of research and science. Some of the topics included Childhood Disease Prevention, Homeopathic prophylaxis as an aspect of gov’tal programs, Nosodes Genus Epidemicus and Compexes, Homeoprophylaxis on Agronomy, Homeoprophylaxis on Veternary, Homeoprophylaxis in TB, Homeoprophylaxis in Chagas disease, Homeoprophylaxis in hepatitis, Homeoprophylaxis in Malaria (yours truly, again) and the list of presentations goes on.

(I am sorry for my lack of variety of adjectives for this email – “remarkable”, “awesome” and “amazing” will be repeated often because I have no other way to express my opinion of this conference)

Some of the speakers (known to our English speaking homeopaths) were Martine Jourde, Issac Golden (Aus), Kate Birch (Canada), Tony Pincus (Ainsworth, UK), Leo Van Gelder (NL) & Lindsay Hickey (UK). A number of Cuban & SAmerican homeopaths also presented their work. All have done unique work in the field of homeopathy & epidemic disease.

THE PREVENTION OF EPIDEMIC LEPTOSPIROSIS IN CUBA But none of these remarkable speakers, each presenting their amazing work in disease prevention and use of nosodes could not hold a candle to the historical accomplishment of the Cubans in their presentation of controlling the local endemic-epidemic disease of Leptospirosis.

Now, the Finlay Institute is primarily the Cuban research institute that produces allopathic vaccinations for their country. Since Cuba is outcasted by the USA government, they have come to depend on themselves for the making of medicines, health care programs, etc. And since the Cuba is not under the yoke of the international pharmaceutical juggernaut, they are not held back from adopting homeopathy and other alternative medicines wholeheartedly into their national health programmes. The Finlay director-general herself is very pro-homeopathy (not to mention, besides, a macrobiotic vegetarian).

To put it simply, what they presented is this:

Cuba goes through a yearly cycle of Leptospirosis epidemic, especially after the hurricanes flood the countryside and water pollution reaches its height. (Leptospirosis: infectious disease caused by the spirochaete Leptospira transmitted to humans from rats, giving jaundice and kidney damage. Can cause death)

Annually the population is exposed to the disease, most especially after hurricanes.

Until Aug 2007, the Finlay Institute (a part of the Ministry of Public Health, Cuba) has been distributing its own allopathic Lepto vaccination. August is the height of the hurricane season. Annually, many are left homeless, flooded out and under the stress of disaster situation. There is a sharp rise in the lepto epidemic.

The usual expectacy of infection even with allopathic vaccination would have been around a few thousands, with some deaths included.

Part of the reason for this is that the high cost of vaccination prevents putting but the most at-risk populations (ie children, pregnant women, elderly) on vaccination. The cost of such limited vaccination is about US$3,000.000.

But in Aug 2007, Finlay put approximately 2,200,000 people (yes! 2 million!) in 2 provinces on homoepathic nosode prophylaxis at the cost of about only US$ 200,000.

That figure represents the entire population of the 2 provinces. The prophylaxis consisted of 2 single doses about 2 weeks apart. Included in the dose was the Lepto nosode + some Bach flower remedies to address the mental distress of the disaster situation.

How very amazing it was to watch this presentation being made. Up to the point, the presenters were showing us graph after graph of the usual rise of the epidemic, year after year, even with the use of allopathic vaccination. Each year the graphs would edge higher and higher towards the year-end, reaching up to the thousands of infected.

But this time, within 2 weeks after Aug 2007, the rising lines literally dropped off the chart to ZERO-Ten infections only! Yes. Near-zero infections, zero deaths from leptospirosis after Aug 2007. And in 2008, no deaths, infections less than 10 a month.

HISTORY MADE for Homeopathy
This mass treatment of 2 million people with homeopathy, I don’t believe, has been done anywhere else in the world, not even in India, where homeopathy enjoys the shelter of the government.

And the awesome results of going from hundreds of infected to near-zero in the period of a few weeks, also is historical. My jaw dropped as I watched the graphs demonstrate their success.

The Cuban team readily admits that they have not invented anything new as far as homeopathic philosophy or application. They have simply followed what we homeopaths know to work. And since they have no pharmaceutical multi-nationals to stop them, they were able to do it on a massive scale unknown in the history of homeopathy.

What is remarkable is their application to such a large population, and its dramatic success, with full scientific verification. The results are incontrovertible and undeniable even by the most rabid of anti-homeopaths.

I’m eagerly awaiting their formal publication in the medical journals of this remarkable event. I’m sure once these medical results are published, homeopaths will have more “weapons” in our “arsenal” to fight for our existence and for the adoption of homeopathy in national health programmes in industrialized and developing countries.

As a word or two about Dra Heurgo, Dr. Bravo and the rest of the Cuban team. Truly remarkable people. “Concita” as Dra Heurgo is lovingly known by the people of Cuba, is well known and loved as a woman who has done remarkable work to improve the health of the population. I found her to be a remarkable person – untiring, passionate about her work and compassionate in her motivation to serve her fellow human beings.

I should like to nominate her for the Nobel Prize.

“You are brilliant, and the earth is hiring.”

The Unforgettable Commencement Address to the Class of 2009, University of Portland, May 3rd, 2009

When I was invited to give this speech, I was asked if I could give a simple short talk that was “direct, naked, taut, honest, passionate, lean, shivering, startling, and graceful.” Boy, no pressure there.

But let’s begin with the startling part. Hey, Class of 2009: you are going to have to figure out what it means to be a human being on earth at a time when every living system is declining, and the rate of decline is accelerating.

Kind of a mind-boggling situation – but not one peer-reviewed paper published in the last thirty years can refute that statement. Basically, the earth needs a new operating system, you are the programmers, and we need it within a few decades.

This planet came with a set of operating instructions, but we seem to have misplaced them. Important rules like don’t poison the water, soil, or air, and don’t let the earth get overcrowded, and don’t touch the thermostat have been broken.

Buckminster Fuller said that spaceship earth was so ingeniously designed that no one has a clue that we are on one, flying through the universe at a million miles per hour, with no need for seatbelts, lots of room in coach, and really good food – but all that is changing.

There is invisible writing on the back of the diploma you will receive, and in case you didn’t bring lemon juice to decode it, I can tell you what it says: YOU ARE BRILLIANT, AND THE EARTH IS HIRING.

The earth couldn’t afford to send any recruiters or limos to your school. It sent you rain, sunsets, ripe cherries, night blooming jasmine, and that unbelievably cute person you are dating. Take the hint.

And here’s the deal: Forget that this task of planet-saving is not possible in the time required. Don’t be put off by people who know what is not possible. Do what needs to be done, and check to see if it was impossible only after you are done.

When asked if I am pessimistic or optimistic about the future, my answer is always the same: If you look at the science about what is happening on earth and aren’t pessimistic, you don’t understand data

But if you meet the people who are working to restore this earth and the lives of the poor, and you aren’t optimistic, you haven’t got a pulse.

What I see everywhere in the world are ordinary people willing to confront despair, power, and incalculable odds in order to restore some semblance of grace, justice, and beauty to this world.

The poet Adrienne Rich wrote, “So much has been destroyed I have cast my lot with those who, age after age, perversely, with no extraordinary power, reconstitute the world.”

There could be no better description. Humanity is coalescing. It is reconstituting the world, and the action is taking place in schoolrooms, farms, jungles, villages, campuses, companies, refuge camps, deserts, fisheries, and slums.

You join a multitude of caring people. No one knows how many groups and organizations are working on the most salient issues of our day: climate change, poverty, deforestation, peace, water, hunger, conservation, human rights, and more.

This is the largest movement the world has ever seen. Rather than control, it seeks connection. Rather than dominance, it strives to disperse concentrations of power.

Like Mercy Corps, it works behind the scenes and gets the job done. Large as it is, no one knows the true size of this movement. It provides hope, support, and meaning to billions of people in the world. Its clout resides in idea, not in force.

It is made up of teachers, children, peasants, businesspeople, rappers, organic farmers, nuns, artists, government workers, fisherfolk, engineers, students, incorrigible writers, weeping Muslims, concerned mothers, poets, doctors without borders, grieving Christians, street musicians, the President of the United States of America, and as the writer David James Duncan would say, the Creator, the One who loves us all in such a huge way.

There is a rabbinical teaching that says if the world is ending and the Messiah arrives, first plant a tree, and then see if the story is true.

Inspiration is not garnered from the litanies of what may befall us; it resides in humanity’s willingness to restore, redress, reform, rebuild, recover, reimagine, and reconsider.

“One day you finally knew what you had to do, and began, though the voices around you kept shouting their bad advice,” is Mary Oliver’s description of moving away from the profane toward a deep sense of connectedness to the living world.

Millions of people are working on behalf of strangers, even if the evening news is usually about the death of strangers. This kindness of strangers has religious, even mythic origins, and very specific eighteenth-century roots.

Abolitionists were the first people to create a national and global movement to defend the rights of those they did not know. Until that time, no group had filed a grievance except on behalf of itself. The founders of this movement were largely unknown – Granville Clark, Thomas Clarkson, Josiah Wedgwood – and their goal was ridiculous on the face of it: at that time three out of four people in the world were enslaved.

Enslaving each other was what human beings had done for ages. And the abolitionist movement was greeted with incredulity. Conservative spokesmen ridiculed the abolitionists as liberals, progressives, do-gooders, meddlers, and activists. They were told they would ruin the economy and drive England into poverty.

But for the first time in history a group of people organized themselves to help people they would never know, from whom they would never receive direct or indirect benefit..

And today tens of millions of people do this every day. It is called the world of non-profits, civil society, schools, social entrepreneurship, and non-governmental organizations, of companies who place social and environmental justice at the top of their strategic goals. The scope and scale of this effort is unparalleled in history.

The living world is not “out there” somewhere, but in your heart.

What do we know about life? In the words of biologist Janine Benyus, life creates the conditions that are conducive to life. I can think of no better motto for a future economy.

We have tens of thousands of abandoned homes without people and tens of thousands of abandoned people without homes. We have failed bankers advising failed regulators on how to save failed assets.

Think about this: we are the only species on this planet without full employment. Brilliant.

We have an economy that tells us that it is cheaper to destroy earth in real time than to renew, restore, and sustain it. You can print money to bail out a bank but you can’t print life to bail out a planet.

At present we are stealing the future, selling it in the present, and calling it gross domestic product. We can just as easily have an economy that is based on healing the future instead of stealing it.

We can either create assets for the future or take the assets of the future. One is called restoration and the other exploitation. And whenever we exploit the earth we exploit people and cause untold suffering.

Working for the earth is not a way to get rich, it is a way to be rich.

The first living cell came into being nearly 40 million centuries ago, and its direct descendants are in all of our bloodstreams. Literally you are breathing molecules this very second that were inhaled by Moses, Mother Teresa, and Bono.

We are vastly interconnected. Our fates are inseparable. We are here because the dream of every cell is to become two cells. In each of you are one quadrillion cells, 90 percent of which are not human cells.

Your body is a community, and without those other microorganisms you would perish in hours.

Each human cell has 400 billion molecules conducting millions of processes between trillions of atoms. The total cellular activity in one human body is staggering: one septillion actions at any one moment, a one with twenty-four zeros after it.

In a millisecond, our body has undergone ten times more processes than there are stars in the universe – exactly what Charles Darwin foretold when he said science would discover that each living creature was a “little universe, formed of a host of self-propagating organisms, inconceivably minute and as numerous as the stars of heaven.”

So I have two questions for you all:

First, ..can you feel your body? Stop for a moment. Feel your body. One septillion activities going on simultaneously, and your body does this so well you are free to ignore it, and wonder instead when this speech will end.

Second question:

Who is in charge of your body? Who is managing those molecules? Hopefully not a political party.

Life is creating the conditions that are conducive to life inside you, just as in all of nature.

What I want you to imagine is that collectively humanity is evincing a deep innate wisdom in coming together to heal the wounds and insults of the past.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once asked what we would do if the stars only came out once every thousand years. No one would sleep that night, of course. The world would become religious overnight. We would be ecstatic, delirious, made rapturous by the glory of God.

Instead the stars come out every night, and we watch television.

This extraordinary time when we are globally aware of each other and the multiple dangers that threaten civilization has never happened, not in a thousand years, not in ten thousand years.

Each of us is as complex and beautiful as all the stars in the universe. We have done great things and we have gone way off course in terms of honoring creation.

You are graduating to the most amazing, challenging, stupefying challenge ever bequested to any generation.

The generations before you failed. They didn’t stay up all night. They got distracted and lost sight of the fact that life is a miracle every moment of your existence.

Nature beckons you to be on her side
You couldn’t ask for a better boss.

The most unrealistic person in the world is the cynic, not the dreamer.

Hopefulness only makes sense when it doesn’t make sense to be hopeful. This is your century. Take it and run as if your life depends on it.

Everything in the news right now paints a picture of impending doom, encouraging us to believe that it’s just a matter of time before we all get sick and millions of people will start dying all across the globe. From what people have shared with me over the last couple of days about it, the impression is that Swine Flu is all around us, has infected tons of people and lots have people have died from it and it’s getting worse and worse. Don’t buy in!

On the Center for Disease Control’s own website reported today that as of 4/30/09, 11 countries have reported 257 cases and in the U.S. there are 109 cases and one death. Look at the numbers yourself – does that seem like a worldwide pandemic to you?

Dr. Mercola wrote a fantastic article that sheds a rational light on this subject and goes into fine detail around all the fear mongering that is being used in our media right now.

The truth is: the Swine Flu is a flu. You get the Swine Flu, you get a flu = fever, cough, runny nose, aches, vomiting and/or diarrhea, low energy. It’s not a death sentence! Again, the CDC itself reports that every year in the U.S. 5-20% of the population gets the flu causing as many as 200,000 hospitalizations and as many as 36,000 deaths!

Let’s face it, fear is all around us right now. Fear about war and terrorists. Fear about bank crashes and recessions. Now it’s fear about pigs and flus! Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Don’t buy into the fear mongering that’s attempting to make you feel weak and small. Take your power back – take your life back.”

The best defense against swine flu, or any flu, is the age old remedy of colloidal silver. The metal silve r in its colloidal state can be safely consumed and used in the body. Rep. Ron Paul has introduced the Parental Consent Act to
protect families from mandatory “mental health screening” — a thinly-veiled
attempt by Big Pharma to drug expectant mothers and new moms with dangerous
psychiatric drugs.

Here’s the full text of the speech given by Ron Paul in the House of
Representatives, April 30, 2009:

Madam Speaker, I rise to introduce the Parental Consent Act. This bill
forbids Federal funds from being used for any universal or mandatory
mental-health screening of students without the express, written, voluntary,
informed consent of their parents or legal guardians. This bill protects the
fundamental right of parents to direct and control the upbringing and
education of their children.

The New Freedom Commission on Mental Health has recommended that the federal
and state governments work toward the implementation of a comprehensive
system of mental-health screening for all Americans. The commission
recommends that universal or mandatory mental-health screening first be
implemented in public schools as a prelude to expanding it to the general
public. However, neither the commission’s report nor any related
mental-health screening proposal requires parental consent before a child is
subjected to mental-health screening. Federally-funded universal or
mandatory mental-health screening in schools without parental consent could
lead to labeling more children as “ADD” or “hyperactive” and thus force more
children to take psychotropic drugs, such as Ritalin, against their parents’
wishes.

Already, too many children are suffering from being prescribed psychotropic
drugs for nothing more than children’s typical rambunctious behavior.
According to Medco Health Solutions, more than 2.2 million children are
receiving more than one psychotropic drug at one time. In fact, according to
Medico Trends, in 2003, total spending on psychiatric drugs for children
exceeded spending on antibiotics or asthma medication.

Many children have suffered harmful side effects from using psychotropic
drugs. Some of the possible side effects include mania, violence,
dependence, and weight gain. Yet, parents are already being threatened with
child abuse charges if they resist efforts to drug their children. Imagine
how much easier it will be to drug children against their parents’ wishes if
a federally-funded mental-health screener makes the recommendation.

Universal or mandatory mental-health screening could also provide a
justification for stigmatizing children from families that support
traditional values. Even the authors of mental-health diagnosis manuals
admit that mental-health diagnoses are subjective and based on social
constructions. Therefore, it is all too easy for a psychiatrist to label a
person’s disagreement with the psychiatrist’ s political beliefs a mental
disorder. For example, a federally-funded school violence prevention program
lists “intolerance” as a mental problem that may lead to school violence.
Because “intolerance” is often a code word for believing in traditional
values, children who share their parents’ values could be labeled as having
mental problems and a risk of causing violence. If the mandatory
mental-health screening program applies to adults, everyone who believes in
traditional values could have his or her beliefs stigmatized as a sign of a
mental disorder. Taxpayer dollars should not support programs that may label
those who adhere to traditional values as having a “mental disorder.”

Madam Speaker, universal or mandatory mental-health screening threatens to
undermine parents’ right to raise their children as the parents see fit.
Forced mental-health screening could also endanger the health of children by
leading to more children being improperly placed on psychotropic drugs, such
as Ritalin, or stigmatized as “mentally ill” or a risk of causing violence
because they adhere to traditional values. Congress has a responsibility to
the nation’s parents and children to stop this from happening. I, therefore,
urge my colleagues to cosponsor the Parental Consent Act.

Those filthy swine… The swine flu “epidemic” is only a few days old, and Big Pharma is already plotting to make a fortune.

European drug maker Roche announced it was scaling up production of Tamiflu, giving a boost to its stock price and sending millions into the Roche coffers. GlaxoSmithKline, which makes the anti-flu drug Relenza, is also seeing its stock price climb, as investors hope this swine flu is the biggest thing since the bubonic plague.

There’s only one problem here – it’s not going to happen. You read the Daily Dose because I always give you the straight scoop, and because I’m not afraid to tell you when the mainstream has it wrong.

And they have it wrong on swine flu. It won’t be an epidemic – it’ll barely even be a ripple. I’ve run medical clinics in Africa – I know what an epidemic looks like.

And this isn’t it.

The media is blowing swine flu out of proportion so it can feed its 24-hour news cycle – the same media, mind you, that had us convinced that avian flu was going to destroy the planet a few years ago.

Disease spreads rapidly through Mexico because large areas of the country lack clean water and basic sanitation. Seeing a doctor – let alone a qualified doctor – is a luxury unavailable to most of the population. Of course the flu is killing people in Mexico – so are a lot of other diseases that are successfully treated in America. People in Mexico still die from diarrhea, for Pete’s sake!

Yes, they have apparently had some cases of bad swine flu in Mexico. They’ve had lots of dengue fever and chagas, too, but you don’t need to stay up at night worrying about it. Beating the swine flu isn’t any different from beating the regular flu. Wash your hands. Avoid large crowds if you can. Get plenty of rest and fluids if you start getting sick.

And don’t be afraid to eat pork or any other meat, for that matter, as it’s not the pigs who are getting sick. Of course, I’m not recommending you eat Mexican pork – or any food produced in Mexico, for that matter. Hopefully the tainted peppers outbreak of 2008 taught us that. But don’t change your diet because of some so-called swine flu epidemic.

It’s no epidemic. It’s no public health catastrophe. It’s good theatre – and nothing more.

“Down under” Coke ads get two thumbs down

Coca-Cola just got its hand slapped by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for false and misleading advertising. The soft drink company ran a series of “myth-busting” Coke ads proclaiming headlines like…

“Myth: Makes you fat.”
“Myth: Rots your teeth.”
“Myth: Packed with caffeine.”

Who are they kidding? According to an ACCC statement, “Coke’s messages were totally unacceptable, creating an impression which is likely to mislead that Coca-Cola cannot contribute to weight gain, obesity and tooth decay.”

The managing director of Coca-Cola South Pacific, Gareth Edgecombe, said, “We certainly did not intend our message to be misleading.”

Not misleading? Yeah right. I find it hard to believe that Edgecombe and Coke’s entire marketing team are unaware of the fact that the sugary soft drink, which has 155 calories and 64 milligrams of caffeine per 12 ounce serving, can’t make you gain weight. Or get cavities. Or isn’t going to give you a caffeine jolt.
